A Reader Asks: Is a Medical Spa and A Plastic Surgeon the Same Thing?

Q.  Is a medical spa and a plastic surgeon the same thing?

A.  Although a plastic surgeon may own, run or work at a medical spa, they are not the same thing.  A medical spa is a facility with a medical program run under the supervision of a licensed health care professional, as specified by the International Medical Spa Association.  Medical spas may used lasers, intense pulsed light technology, photofacials, medical microdermabrasion, medical peels, Botox and Restylane injections and other medical beauty procedures.  A medical spa usually offers traditional spa services, too, such as facials, massages and pedicures.  While a doctor is required to oversee the procedures performed at a medical spa, the doctor is not required to always be on the premises.

On the other hand, a plastic surgeon is a medical specialist and highly trained doctor, who uses numerous surgical and nonsurgical techniques to change the appearance and function of your body.  Reconstructive operations and cosmetic enhancements may both be performed by a plastic surgeon.  When aesthetics are considered to be more important than functionality, plastic surgery may be referred to as cosmetic surgery.  A plastic surgeon must be licensed as a physician and accordingly, perform all their own work while medical spas employ technicians to perform certain procedures.
