A Reader Asks: Is it Mandatory to Have Extractions During a Facial? It Makes My Face Bruised, Red and Blotchy

Q.  Is is mandatory to have extractions during a facial?  It makes my face bruised, red and blotchy.

A.  While it is not mandatory to have extractions during a facial, it helps to clean your face and get rid of clogged pores.  Extractions should only be performed by a licensed aesthetician who is familiar with the procedure and uses sterile instruments in a clean environment.  While some redness and blotchiness is natural, bruising should not necessarily occur during facial extractions.

There are also other ways to gently exfoliate your skin and unclog your pores.  Using a clay mask can help to cleanse your skin and clear your pores.  There are also glycolic peels and facial treatments to remove the tops layers of your skin and reveal smoother skin beneath.  Facial steam treatments gently loosen dirt and oil in your pores so it can be cleansed away.  Depending on the type of facial you get, extractions may not even be recommended.

Discuss your goals with the aesthetician and see which procedure she suggests.  If you are uncomfortable with facial extractions, see what other options your spa technician suggests that may be more pleasurable and less painful for your particular skin type.
