Alternative Spa Therapy: Shiatsu Massage
Shiatsu massage provides a host of benefits and is quickly becoming a favorite alternative spa therapy. Shiatsu massage is massage therapy using finger pressure on muscle pressure points and specific Chinese meridian points. The therapy is also known as acupressure. The Shiatsu massage therapist skillfully uses his or her thumbs, fingers and palms to apply pressure to specific points relative to the client’s needs.
Shiatsu massage differs from western massage in that the therapist does not squeeze, rub or kneed the muscles. The Chinese method of applying pressure to points along the meridians opens energy blockages which then allows for the optimal flow of chi. The many proven benefits of Shiatsu massage include deep muscle relaxation, release of toxins, increase in flexibility, lowers blood pressure and increases mental and spiritual awareness.
Clients also may experience relief from depression, nausea, headaches, arthritis and stiffness from Shiatsu massage. Most clients that enjoy deep tissue massage will enjoy Shiatsu massage, but there are some differences. Shiatsu involves some deep breathing, rotating and stretching of joints as well as pressure point manipulation.
Many have Shiatsu massage on a regular basis as it is believe to be truly holistic in its preventative and healing benefits.
