Aromatherapy Spa Treatments: Be Cautious of Allergies and Sensitivities

Aromatherapy spa treatments can be absolutely wonderful. They use essences of botanical oils that were determined to have beneficial effects thousands of years ago, as described in the Ayurveda, the system of medicine that evolved in India centuries ago. Essential oils are each distilled from the leaves, flowers or fruit of a single plant.

Some essences produce relaxation, even a mild state of sedation, while others invigorate, quell pain and help release muscle spasms and help with healing wounds. Though aromatherapy oils may be used in baths, inhaled and applied via compresses, the most popular way for receiving the benefits of aromatherapy has traditionally been aromatherapy massage.

However, if you have allergies to certain plants and flowers, aromatherapy can trigger unpleasant allergic reactions such as sinus congestion, itchy skin and hives. So however enticing aromatherapy is, before booking a spa aromatherapy treatment, make certain that the oils your therapist uses do not contain any from plants to which you are allergic.
