Did You Know? Most Spa Directors Have No Formal Management Training

Unlike managers in many other kinds of businesses, most spa managers have no formal management training.  They tend to “come up through the ranks” by being involve with spas in some fashion or another before becoming managers.

That’s really unfortunate. Not because they shouldn’t have worked in a spa before starting to manage one, but because managing people is what good business management is all about, and good, effective business management does require training.

If you’ve been appointed to manage a spa, never assume that you know more than you do. Take some spa management courses if at all possible.  While these are not universally available across the country, there are some online versions of spa management programs you should definitely look into.

Don’t discount your local resources, either.  Many community colleges offer some form of business management training courses, and organizations such as the Senior Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) hold management seminars and workshops.

In short, managing a spa well demands knowing how to manage well, period—so if your management training is a little sketchy, now is the time to fill it in!
