The Hottest Trend: Dental Day Spas (it ain’t your mama’s dentist!)
My apprehension about going in for my first-ever porcelain crown was quickly proven unnecessary thanks to the new features my dentist has added to her office since my last visit.
I did a double-take when I arrived. Was I in the wrong office? There was a reassuring ambiance spilling from the dimmed lights in the waiting area and the hallway, and the walls had been painted with a subtle faux technique that was so inviting. That scent of medicine, so often lingering in doctors’ offices, was gone. Instead, it smelled almost like I was visiting my massage therapist.
My dentist always offered me nitrous oxide and my choice of music during appointments, which I’ve always appreciated. She took a few more steps for her patients’ comfort, though, and it made such a difference not only during my appointment, but in my attitude for the rest of the day.
I’d never heard of spa dentistry, but it’s definitely the way to go!
When I was a child I actually bit a dentist who hadn’t bothered to make sure I was totally numb before he began working on my mouth. Ever since then, I’ve had a phobia about dental visits, even if it’s just my twice-a-year cleaning appointment. But the trickling waterfall and soothing lavender aromatherapy eased my blood pressure down within minutes.
While my dentist took care of the prep work on my tooth, I enjoyed a hot paraffin wax treatment for my hands, reflexology, and then a tingly peppermint foot scrub. They practically lulled me to sleep! I haven’t felt this pampered since… OK, I can’t remember EVER feeling this posh.
Except for the fact that my mouth was wide open, I practically forgot that I was having dental work done. Drill? What drill?? Its unwelcome noise never intruded past the earphones and music that pacified me during the procedure.
I left the office feeling revitalized, moisturized, and soft, with a warm gourmet cookie to go. My dentist confided in me that she feels more comfortable working on patients who are in a spa-induced state of bliss. When we’re terror-free, she said, it relieves her stress as well, and allows her to do a better job.
Can you believe I’m actually looking forward to my next visit? When I return in two weeks for the permanent crown, I’m doing something sassy and fun – I’m scheduled for my first French pedicure!
Plus it’s great to know I won’t be overcome by fear and chomp down on another dentist’s fingers!
