A Reader Asks: Do Mud Treatments at the Spa Use Real Mud and is this Sanitary?

The idea of sitting in a bathtub filled with mud may not seem like the cleanest or most sanitary way to spend the day, but it is one of the most relaxing and detoxifying things you can do at the spa.  Many people wonder what exactly is in all that mud anyway and question how it can remain sanitary between clients.

Mud baths are made from natural earth elements that are combined into a mud-like consistency.  However, this is not the mud that’s in your backyard that your kids are making mud pies out of.  Most spas use local ingredients, such as volcanic ash, clay, peat moss, or other mineral rich materials.  These are then mixed with natural or hot spring waters into a mud-like consistency that is perfect for relaxing muscles, drawing out toxins, and moisturizing the skin.

When it comes to sanitation, a mud bath is just as clean and safe as the heated whirlpool you are going to step into after your mud bath treatment.  Between guests the mud is pumped through a 200+ high temperature bath of cleansing waters, replenished with new mud, and then raked through to provide each guest the cleanest, safest mud possible.
